Marion Holmes Katz is a Professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at NYU’s College of Arts and Science. She joined the faculty in 2002 after earning her Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures from the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on the premodern history of Islamic law, with particular interests in gender, ritual, and religious authority. Katz has written widely on topics such as women’s roles in mosques, Islamic ritual practices, and medieval Islamic history. She is recognized for bridging scholarship on law, religion, and gender in Islamic studies, making her a leading voice in the field.
