He is the Omar and Azmeralda Alfi Distinguished Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law, and one of the world’s leading authorities on Shari’ah, Islamic law, and human rights. He earned degrees from Yale (B.A.), University of Pennsylvania (J.D.), and Princeton (Ph.D. in Islamic Studies). At UCLA, he teaches courses such as International Human Rights, Islamic Jurisprudence, Political Asylum and Refugee Law, Muslims, Race and Law, and more. He has also chaired UCLA’s Islamic Studies Interdepartmental Program and received major honors including the University of Oslo Human Rights Award.
