The Lackawanna Muslim Community has been in existence in Western New York since early 1900. Alhamdulillah, the Muslim community in the city of Lackawanna mainly of Yemeni descent was able with the help of Allah (SWT) to establish a Community Center in 1959, a Masjid in 1974, an Islamic Weekend School in 1982, and a full-time KG – High School in 2012.
It is from the mercy of Allah that the Muslim Community in the city of Lackawanna and surrounding areas has been growing exponentially with more people from other ethnicities such as African Americans, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bosnian, Iraqis, and Palestinian.
The Lackawanna Islamic Mosque since it was established has gone through multiple renovations and expansions. The building was originally a church that was purchased and converted into a Mosque in 1974 to accommodate approximately 150 people. A major expansion was completed in the year 2000 where the Masjid was expanded to accommodate approximately 500 people. Also, the community is planning to start another expansion project during the year 2020, In’sha’Allah, the new expansion will allow the Masjid to accommodate approximately 1500 people.
