He is a Professor of Comparative Literature at UCLA. He earned his Ph.D. (2004) and M.A. (1999) from Université de Montréal, Québec, and his B.A. from Université de Manouba, Tunisia (1997). His research explores modern and contemporary multilingual Arab literatures and cultures of North Africa and the Middle East, as well as Arab popular music, film, and diaspora studies. He also works in postcolonial and modernist comparative cultural studies, often examining the relationship between the poetics and politics of literature and culture.
