Omar Akbari is a Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology at UC San Diego, where he leads the Akbari Lab. He earned his Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Nevada, Reno, and completed postdoctoral training in Biological Engineering at Caltech. His research harnesses synthetic biology, genome engineering, and genetics to combat vector‑borne diseases and protect global food security. He has received major honors including the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (2019), the DARPA ReVector Award (2020), and recognition as a Gilbreth Lecturer by the National Academy of Engineering (2021).
